How GIF compression works in practice

GIF is a palette-based animation format. A GIF file stores image frames and color tables, and those choices affect the final file size. The official GIF89a specification describes global and local color tables, which is why palette complexity is so important for GIF optimization.

Compression usually helps in three ways:

  1. It optimizes the frame data so repeated or unnecessary information takes less space.
  2. It applies controlled lossy compression, removing small details that are often hard to notice in a fast reaction GIF.
  3. In the stronger mode, it reduces the palette, which can lower file size but may make gradients or photo-like scenes look rougher.

That is why a simple meme with flat colors can shrink noticeably while a long animation from a video clip may remain large. The right question is not "what compression percentage should every GIF reach?" but "does this result still look good enough for the conversation?"

Recommended workflow for Discord

Before you compress

Before using the stronger mode, check the source GIF itself:

  • Is the GIF longer than the moment people need to see?
  • Is the frame wider or taller than it will appear in chat?

  • Has the file already been exported by another compressor or social platform?

Default compression vs smallest size

Default compression is the best first choice. It aims for a smaller file while keeping the animation usable for everyday sharing. Use it for memes, short loops, and animations where the subject needs to remain clear.

Smallest size is for strict upload situations. It pushes harder and may reduce visible quality. Use it when the current GIF is blocked by file size, or when the animation is more important than fine detail.

If a compressed GIF looks blotchy, banded, or hard to read, go back to Default compression or adjust the source. Smaller is not automatically better when the result no longer communicates the message.

Why some GIFs do not shrink much

Compression results vary because GIFs vary. A file that was already optimized by an editor, social platform, or previous compressor may have little redundant data left. A GIF with many unique frames has fewer opportunities for frame optimization. A GIF with detailed photographic content may need more colors to avoid obvious banding.

Common reasons a GIF remains large:

  • It has too many frames or runs too long.
  • Its dimensions are larger than needed for a chat window.
  • It contains camera footage or complex gradients.
  • It has already been compressed once.
  • It needs text clarity, which limits how aggressive compression can be.
